Murdoch's empire which, in the US include Fox News, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post, epitomizes how toxic and morally bankrupt corporate media has become. Murdoch's scandal broke when it was revealed that representatives of News International, owned by Rupert Murdoch, were involved in hacking phones of over 12,000 people, bribing police officers and using ties to the criminal underworld to blackmail and intimidate leading public figures (link: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/jul/20/scandal-exposed-scale-elite-corruption). The timely, albeit disturbing and unexplained death of the chief whistle-blower Sean Hoare, was immediately declared a suicide and "non-suspicious" by complicit British authorities (link: http://www.wsws.org/articles/2011/jul2011/pers-j22.shtml). Every major institution and leading politician in the UK is implicated in the Murdoch scandal. The dubious relations with Murdoch's criminal corporate news empire, top officials of the Metropolitan Police, the Crown Prosecution Service and successive governments have been blocking investigations into News International's criminal behavior for at least the past six years. Murdoch and company haven't been prosecuted because Murdoch has been manipulating politicians in Britain, the US, Australia, Scotland and many other countries for the past three decades. The ruling class he has created has enabled him while covering up his crimes.

Murdoch's UK hacking scandal is only one piece of the puzzle, and it presents a clearer picture of how Murdoch and company have been doing business for the past few decades. Part of the puzzle includes one of Murdoch's actions involving mafia-style tactics with another company that involved a lot more than hacking (link: http://whowhatwhy.com/2011/07/21/murdoch-us-scandal-brewing/). Bloomberg recently reported a story involving News America Marketing -- another piece of Murdoch's criminal corporate news media -- trying to buy Floorgraphics, a New Jersey firm that sold advertising in grocery stores. Floorgraphics did not want to sell so News America started a campaign of spreading lies and misinformation about Floorgraphics to clients and seeking other ways to destroy it.

In 2004, when Floorgraphics was competing with News America for a "critically important" contract with Safeway, its computers were hacked. News America got the contract with Safeway. According to the report, a Floorgraphics executive contends that Murdoch's News America prevailed by using "comprehensive" financial data stored on Floorgraphics' website. Floorgraphics contacted News America's chief financial officer when the breach was discovered, but Murdoch's company did not respond. Years after the fact, during a 2009 civil trial over the hacking, News America admitted that its computers were used to hack Floorgraphics, but claimed it did not know who was responsible for the hacking. Later, News America falsely claimed it condemns such conduct and that such conduct violates the standards of the company (link: http://whowhatwhy.com/2011/07/21/murdoch-us-scandal-brewing/). Such conduct by Murdoch's criminal corporate media empire is commonplace and normal operating procedure.

Murdoch's Scandal Is Not Really About Phone Hacking At All

Rupert Murdoch's troubles are growing. As noted by Mike Whitney, "The firestorm in the UK is not really about phone hacking at all. It's about corporate fiefdoms and unelected oligarchs who control the flow of information and use that power to their own advantage" (link: http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article28609.htm). The same holds true in the US. Murdoch's criminal corporations -- led by News Corp's Fox "News" -- spread the lies and propaganda of the Republicans and Democrats, and Murdoch influences the culture of corruption in Washington. In typical fashion, Rupert Murdoch and his son James, who runs News Corp with his father, abused their power and broke an untold number of laws while raping and plundering the US and the UK, are denying and lying about their responsibilities in the scandals (link: http://www.thenation.com/blog/162179/murdochs-power-without-responsibility).

As Murdoch's hacking scandal unravels, it is obvious that the ultimate responsibility for all the illegal activities conducted by Murdoch's corporations belong to Rupert Murdoch. News Corp is not in the news business. News Corp influences the news (link: http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article28634.htm). In fact, News Corp isn't a news corporation at all. As noted by AlterNet, News Corp is the lobbying arm of Rupert Murdoch's global conglomerate, in the business of wielding influence (link: http://www.alternet.org/story/151713/the_big_lie_at_the_heart_of_rupert_murdoch%27s_media_empire). The standards and culture of a journalistic institution are set from the top down, by its owner, publisher, and top editors. Reporters and editors do not routinely break laws, bribe policemen and politicians, wiretap and act like underworld thugs while conducting covert black operations (link: http://inteldaily.com/2011/07/a-link-to-the-murdoch-scandal-under-the-radar-firm-sells-phone-tracking-tools-to-police-intelligence-agencies/) -- unless those actions are a matter of recognized and understood policy. In Murdoch's criminal corporate news empire those actions are condoned. Private detectives and phone hackers are the primary sources of News Corp's information with the knowledge and approval of people at the top -- more so in the case of people who are closest to Rupert Murdoch. Indeed, instead of running a "News" media conglomerate, Rupert Murdoch has been operating what amounts to his own private intelligence service (link: http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article28625.htm).

The global empire built by Murdoch uses all its "media" sources as a lobbying arm. Having "press" credentials allows Murdoch's empire to wield influence on behalf of a much larger and more profitable "media" business to satisfy the empirical whims and power trips of Rupert Murdoch. In Murdoch's corporations, you do whatever it takes to get the story, regardless of how illegal and immoral it may be, take no prisoners, destroy your competition, and the end will justify the means (link: http://www.commondreams.org/video/2011/07/19). Since news of Murdoch's hacking started exploding, Fox News has been doing its best to keep the truth out of the public eye (link: http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article28608.htm). Once the story of Murdoch's illegality began breaking, Murdoch hired a firm to handle public relations in the UK. Instead of taking responsibility for their actions, Murdoch relies on denial, lies and deflecting questions in hopes that the scandal will go away.

Recently Rupert and James Murdoch appeared before the British Parliament's Culture, Media and Sports Select Committee to testify about their actions and what they knew about the scandal. Unsurprisingly, the appearance was more a case of well-choreographed political theater than anything else (link: http://www.wsws.org/articles/2011/jul2011/murd-j20.shtml). As with other governmental inquiries, the Murdoch’s knew there was no danger of them being asked probing questions (link: http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article28624.htm), let alone suffering any legal consequences from their testimony. Since Rupert Murdoch owns most of the politicians in the UK, including Britain's Prime Minister (link: http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article28626.htm), actual investigations by the government won't occur and Murdoch's crimes will be dutifully covered up.

Murdoch Tried To Change Anti-Bribery Law That Could Be Used To Prosecute Him In The US

The US Department of Justice (DoJ) claims it is investigating crimes committed by Murdoch and company in the US, but we have seen repeatedly that DoJ leadership, under Attorney General Eric Holder, is heavily implicated in Washington's culture of corruption. Many people believe the US could prosecute Rupert Murdoch and his criminal corporate news empire under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) for their actions in the UK (link: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2011/07/19/rupert-murdoch-s-american-lawbreaking-how-he-could-be-prosecuted.html). Under the FCPA, which became law in 1977, a typical prosecution might involve something like going after an official of a US-based company for paying a bribe to an official in a foreign country to win a government contract and there are both civil and criminal jurisdictions to such prosecutions according to New York attorney Roland Riopelle. But, knowing President Obama and his DoJ as well as we do, you can bet the U.S. won't do anything but immunize Murdoch and company from prosecution.

Rupert Murdoch reportedly donated $1 million to a pro-business lobby in the US months before the group launched a high-profile campaign to alter the FCPA law that could potentially be used to prosecute News Corp over what began as the phone hacking scandal (link: http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article28623.htm). Last summer News Corp "donated" the $1 million to the US Chamber of Commerce (CoC). In October the US CoC concocted a six-point program for amending the FCPA. The timing of Murdoch's donation and the CoC's dubious actions to weaken anti-bribery legislation offers more evidence of the depths of Murdoch's crimes. It's no secret that Murdoch is one of many billionaire corporate leaders who has funded the deceptive CoC for years. Murdoch's corporate conglomerate has used its power and money to buy politicians and change laws that don't suit them for years.

There has been little mention of Murdoch's role in the Iraq war (link: http://www.presstv.com/detail/189505.html). And of course, Murdoch's empire has been pushing the misleading Pro-Israel agenda that continues destroying the US (link: http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article28652.htm), and probably will continue to do so. Unsurprisingly, as noted by John Pilger, “Amid the Murdoch Scandal, there's an acrid smell of business as usual” (link: http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article28651.htm). As we have seen repeatedly, corporate media, the fourth estate which was once the watchdog of the people, is bankrupt (link: http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article28549.htm). The story of Murdoch's criminal corporate news media epitomizes what can happen when a media company gets huge enough to become a law unto itself. It highlights what happens when government and media get too close and too cozy. Government control of media is not the answer, nor is media control of the government. The endless depths of collusive deception carried out by Rupert Murdoch's criminal corporate news media and worldwide governments are slowly coming to light. As the investigations continue, more malfeasance will be revealed.
